To clean a moissanite ring, use warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush for 30 seconds — then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. That is the whole routine. What actually ruins moissanite jewelry is not dirt but the wrong cleaning method: ultrasonic cleaners on pavé settings and chlorine exposure on 925 silver.
The 30-Second Cleaning Routine That Works
Your customers can run this at home with kitchen supplies, and your staff can run it at the counter between try-ons:
- Warm water + mild soap. A bowl of warm (not hot) water with one drop of neutral dish soap. Hot water speeds tarnish chemistry; strong detergents attack plating.
- Soft brush, 30 seconds. An unused soft toothbrush or a makeup brush. Work the bristles under the stone and along the gallery — that is where skin oils collect and kill sparkle.
- Rinse and dry. Room-temperature rinse, then a lint-free cloth. Microfiber works; paper towels micro-scratch rhodium plating.
Frequency: once a week for daily-wear pieces, once before photographing inventory. Clean stones photograph measurably brighter — clean your stock before every product shoot.
What to Avoid with Pavé and Micro-Pavé Settings
The stone is nearly indestructible. The setting is not. Two cleaning methods cause most damage claims:
Ultrasonic cleaners. High-frequency cavitation shakes debris loose, but in dense pavé it also works on the weakest claw joints — exactly the ones that were borderline. A ring that survived two years of wear can lose a stone in an ultrasonic tank. If a piece is fully bezel-set or a simple solitaire, ultrasonic is tolerable; on tennis and pavé lines, ban it.
Chlorine and bleach. Pool chlorine and household bleach attack the metal, not the moissanite: they corrode silver alloys and creep under plating. A ring worn into a hot tub fails months earlier than one removed at the edge. Sell the habit with the ring: “spray first, remove for water.”
Why 925 Silver Tarnishes — and How to Slow It Down
Tarnish is silver sulfide: sulfur in the air (and in lotions, rubber, some fabrics) bonding to the metal surface. It is chemistry, not a defect, and it is reversible. The rate depends on three things you can control:
- Humidity and air exposure. Individual sealed bags slow it dramatically. Retail back-stock stored loose in a drawer tarnishes in weeks; bagged pieces last seasons.
- Skin chemistry. Some wearers’ skin accelerates tarnish. Nothing wrong with the silver — the answer is plating: rhodium or 18K vermeil at ≥2.5µm isolates the silver from skin entirely.
- Plating quality. Our anti-tarnish plating regime is why 12-month color-fastness can be promised in writing — non-artificial fading within the first year is handled free, including re-plating consultation.
Care Rules for Vermeil Versions
If you stock the gold-tone line, the cleaning rules tighten slightly: vermeil is 18K gold at ≥2.5µm over sterling silver, and gold is softer than rhodium. Skip abrasive pastes and polishing compounds — they thin the gold layer. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth is again the whole routine, plus one addition: wipe vermeil after wear, because body oils are the slow enemy of the gold layer. The full standards breakdown lives in our vermeil collection guide.
When to Send It Back to the Supplier
Cleaning handles grime. These three symptoms are service issues, not cleaning issues:
- Gray or black that will not lift after the routine — deep tarnish or plating failure; professional re-polish or re-plate.
- A stone that spins or clicks — claw fatigue; stop wearing it and get it re-set before the stone walks away.
- Color change on the gold layer within months — if it happens inside 12 months on our production, it is a warranty case: handled free, with photos as the only paperwork.
Claims start with photos and end within 48 hours on our side — the full terms are on the wholesale FAQ.
The Retail Playbook Version
Train staff on one sentence: “Wash it like a wine glass — warm water, mild soap, soft cloth, no machines.” It prevents 90% of after-sales issues, costs nothing, and customers remember the store that taught it to them. For the deeper standards — stone grading, plating thickness, compliance paperwork — the rings collection and our other guides are the reference shelf.
