What Is Gold Vermeil Jewelry? 18K Over Recycled 925 Silver, FTC Rules Included

Gold vermeil is gold plating with a legal definition: a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns over a sterling silver base, per the FTC’s Guides for the Jewelry Industry (16 CFR Part 23). Unlike ordinary “gold plated” jewelry — which has no minimum thickness and often hides a brass core — vermeil must be thick, must be real gold (10K or higher, 18K typical), and must sit on silver.

The FTC Definition, in Plain Words

Three conditions make a piece legally “vermeil” rather than just “gold colored”:

  • Base metal: sterling silver. 925‰ minimum. Not brass, not copper, not “jeweler’s alloy.”
  • Gold layer: ≥2.5 microns (µm). Measured thickness, verifiable with standard coating instruments. Fashion plating runs 0.05–0.5µm — up to 50 times thinner.
  • Real gold: 10K or higher, with 14K and 18K the commercial norm. 18K gives the color most buyers associate with “gold.”

The three conditions come from the same source, so cite it in your listing copy: the FTC Guides for the Jewelry Industry, 16 CFR Part 23 — §23.6 for the plating-thickness rule, §23.5 for the sterling description. Two adjacent rules matter for a vermeil catalog: the EU’s nickel-release limit for prolonged skin contact is 0.5 µg/cm²/week under REACH Annex XVII entry 27, and UK assay law treats a 925 stamp as a legal claim under the Hallmarking Act, covered in our UK/EU hallmarking guide.

Why the definition matters commercially: “vermeil” is a regulated term on US marketplaces. Listing a 0.3µm plated piece as vermeil risks takedowns and returns; listing a compliant piece lets you use the word with documentation behind it. Our production plating runs at ≥2.5µm of 18K — a spec we can write into contracts and certificates of analysis.

Vermeil vs Gold Plated vs Solid Gold

Gold Vermeil Gold Plated Solid Gold
Gold layer ≥2.5µm, 18K typical 0.05–0.5µm, no standard —
Base metal Sterling silver (925‰) Usually brass —
Expected life 2–3 years+ with care Weeks to months Generations
Hypoallergenic Yes — silver base Depends on base metal Yes
Price band Mid-market Entry Premium

The buyer logic: vermeil captures 80% of the solid-gold experience at 20% of the price, and unlike plating it holds that experience for years.

How Long Does Gold Vermeil Jewelry Last?

With normal wear and basic care, 2–3 years or more before the gold layer visibly thins at contact points (clasp inner edges, band tops). Heavier daily wear with chemical exposure shortens it; occasional wear extends it far beyond.

Our own production backs the number with a warranty: 12-month color-fastness, with non-artificial fading handled free of charge — the full terms live on our vermeil collection page. The plating line also matters: electroplating in-house (rather than outsourced) lets thickness be spot-checked per batch, which is the difference between a promise and a measurement.

Surface finishing before plating — plating quality is decided before the tank, in the prep.

Thickness is the dial that moves lifespan, and the relationship is roughly linear once the base prep is right:

Gold layer Typical use Realistic life with care
0.1–0.5µm (fashion plating) Costume pieces, short-cycle fashion Weeks to months
1µm Light-wear accents About a year
2.5µm — the vermeil legal floor Everyday vermeil 2–3 years+
5µm+ Heavy-wear lines, heirloom finish 5 years and beyond

Contact points thin first — clasp inner edges, ring band tops, the backs of earrings — so a supplier’s spot-check should measure there, not on a flat face the plating bath coats generously.

Care Rules That Double Vermeil Lifespan

Five habits, all free to teach at the counter:

  • Spray first, wear second. Perfume and lotion chemicals land on the gold layer first otherwise.
  • No chlorine. Pools and hot tubs attack both the gold layer and the silver beneath.
  • Wipe after wear. A lint-free cloth removes the skin oils that slowly dull the surface.
  • Store apart. Individual bags or compartments — harder metals scratch vermeil surfaces.
  • Gentle cleaning only. Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth. No abrasive pastes, no ultrasonic tanks.

What to Verify Before Buying Vermeil Wholesale

Ask any supplier — including us — for these four items before the first order:

  • Layer thickness in writing. “≥2.5µm” as a contract line, not a sales call. Verified by coating measurement on delivery if in doubt.
  • Base silver assay. Ours tests at 976.8‰ by third-party lab (report No.24201801196-1) — above the 925‰ requirement. The assay report set is downloadable from our certifications page.
  • Nickel compliance. Nickel not detected against REACH’s 0.5µg/cm²·week limit for prolonged skin contact (0.2 for items that pierce the skin) — the EU market’s entry requirement, and the one cheap plating lines fail.
  • Recycled silver availability if your brand carries a sustainability story: same tested purity, recycled feedstock.

A supplier who answers those four with documents, not adjectives, is a supplier whose vermeil you can list without asterisks. The wholesale terms — MOQ 30–50 for stock vermeil, 50–100 for custom, samples in 7–10 days — are summarized with everything else in the wholesale program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold vermeil waterproof?

No — and neither is solid gold. Water itself is harmless; chlorine, salt water and soapy residue are what shorten the layer’s life. Remove vermeil for pools, hot tubs and cleaning chores.

Can I sell vermeil on Amazon and Etsy?

Yes, when it genuinely meets the FTC definition. Marketplaces police the term — keep your supplier’s thickness specification and assay reports on file, and the listing is defensible on request.

Does vermeil turn green?

Not when the base is sterling silver. Green skin staining comes from copper and brass alloys reacting with sweat; a 925 silver base removes the cause. Redness from cheap plating is a base-metal problem, not a gold-layer one.
