Moissanite on eBay: Fine Jewelry or Fashion Jewelry? The Metal Rule That Decides Your Category

On eBay, a moissanite ring belongs in Fine Jewelry when the metal is fine — sterling silver .925 or higher, gold 10 karats or higher, or a platinum-group metal at .850 or above — and in Fashion Jewelry when the base metal is anything else. The stone does not decide it: eBay’s jewelry policy names moissanite on its official list of fine gemstones, so the circulating advice that “moissanite always goes in Fashion Jewelry” misreads the policy. What eBay actually requires is that both the metal and the main stone be fine materials before a listing may sit in Fine Jewelry. The wrong category is also not a harmless labeling choice: it is a policy violation that eBay can act on by removing the listing, issuing a warning, restricting activity, or suspending the account.

What does eBay’s jewelry policy actually say about moissanite?

The governing document is eBay’s Jewelry policy, a short page under its Prohibited and restricted items help section, and it is unusually specific. Under “What is considered Fine Jewelry?”, the page lists the gemstones eBay treats as fine — and moissanite appears on that list in its own name, between mint tourmaline and moldavite. Just as telling is where moissanite does not appear: the policy’s list of fashion gemstones names cubic zirconia, strontium titanate, yttrium aluminium garnet and dozens of explicitly “simulated” stones, and moissanite is absent from it.

The policy also tells sellers exactly how to name the stone: “If the stone is not an actual diamond, the term ‘diamond’ cannot be included in the listing. Instead, the material used, such as moissanite, cubic zirconia, glass, etc, should be stated.” Read the two passages together and the picture is unambiguous. eBay treats moissanite as a legitimate gemstone with a name of its own — one that happens to sit on the fine list — not as a disguised diamond, and not as fashion material by default. Any answer that files every moissanite ring under Fashion Jewelry is quoting a rule that is not on the page.

Why does the metal rule decide the category?

Because the category gate is metal-first. The policy states: “To be listed in the Fine Jewelry category, both the metal and main stone must be made from fine materials. Secondary stones can include either fine or fashion materials.” A moissanite main stone, being on the fine gemstones list, passes half of that test automatically. The remaining half — the metal — is what actually sorts the listing.

eBay’s fine metals are gold of 10 karats or higher (including rose, green, chocolate or white gold), silver and sterling silver of .925 or higher, and platinum-group metals at .850 or above. Crucially, the policy adds that gold, silver and platinum “are considered fine if they are a solid metal or if they have been plated with gold, silver, platinum, palladium, or other platinum-group metals.” So plating does not demote a precious-metal base — a gold-plated silver ring is still fine on the metal axis. The demotion rule cuts in the opposite direction: “If the base metal is not gold, silver or a platinum group metal, the jewelry is considered fashion, even if the metal is plated with gold, silver or platinum group metal.” In short: the base metal decides, plating does not rescue a base metal, and moissanite almost never disqualifies anything.

The decision table: every moissanite ring setup, sorted

Ring setup Metal status under eBay policy Stone status Correct category
925 sterling silver band, moissanite center stone Fine (silver .925 or higher) Fine gemstone Fine Jewelry
Solid gold 10K–24K, moissanite center stone Fine (gold 10 karats or higher) Fine gemstone Fine Jewelry
18K gold vermeil over 925 silver, moissanite Fine (fine base metal, fine plating) Fine gemstone Fine Jewelry — disclose the plating in title, item specifics and description
Platinum .850 or above, moissanite Fine (platinum-group .850 or above) Fine gemstone Fine Jewelry
Gold-plated brass or copper, moissanite Fashion (base metal outside gold, silver, platinum group) Fine gemstone Fashion Jewelry
Stainless steel or other alloy, moissanite Fashion Fine gemstone Fashion Jewelry
Metal unknown or not stated by the supplier Cannot be verified as fine Fine gemstone Fashion Jewelry until materials are documented

Two footnotes to the table. First, only the main stone must be fine — accents and pavé may be either fine or fashion materials, so a moissanite center with CZ accents on silver still qualifies for Fine Jewelry. Second, the unknown-materials row is not a technicality: the policy says gemstones of unknown type or treatment “should be listed in the Fashion Jewelry category,” and the same caution applies to an undocumented metal. That is exactly where an unbranded import lands when a seller cannot state what the ring is actually made of.

What happens if the listing sits in the wrong category?

  • It becomes a policy violation on record. eBay closes the jewelry policy by stating that activity on the platform must follow it, the User Agreement and applicable law — and where it does not, actions “may include, as an example only: Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.” Listing removal notices rarely explain that the category itself was the trigger.
  • The listing disappears from the buyers it was meant for. Fine Jewelry is a browsable, filterable shelf on eBay. A .925 silver moissanite ring parked in Fashion Jewelry is invisible to buyers who filter results to Fine Jewelry, and it reads as overpriced to buyers shopping fashion budgets — so it underperforms in both directions.
  • Misdescription risk compounds. Under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, “if the buyer receives the wrong item, or the item was not as described, they are entitled to return it for a refund, even if the seller doesn’t offer returns.” A wrong category stacked on loose stone wording is the classic not-as-described pattern.
  • Mandatory disclosures get missed. The plated-metals rule applies no matter where the item sits: “If your item is made from plated, flashed or filled metals, you will need to clearly state this in the title, item specifics and item description, such as ‘gold-plated silver’.” Sellers who move a vermeil piece to Fashion Jewelry as a perceived safe harbor often drop that disclosure, trading one defect for two.

Which title wording is off-limits for moissanite?

  • Never use bare “diamond”. The policy is categorical: if the stone is not an actual diamond, “the term ‘diamond’ cannot be included in the listing.” State the material — moissanite — instead.
  • “Simulated diamond” only with the word in exactly the right place. The simulated-gems rules allow the simulated gem’s name only if “simulated” sits immediately before it, in the title, item specifics and description, and they require the actual material’s name or brand — here, moissanite — in the title.
  • Do not borrow “lab-created”. That wording is reserved for lab stones that “have the same mineral composition as the natural gemstone.” Moissanite is silicon carbide, not carbon, so “lab-created diamond” is a false label for it, and the policy separately rejects substitute terms such as “man-made” in that wording family.
  • Disclose plated, flashed or filled metals in all three fields. Title, item specifics and description must each carry wording like “gold-plated silver” or “18K gold vermeil” for plated builds — even when the plating sits on a fine base.
  • Respect the stamping rules. Platinum, gold and silver items “must meet applicable laws for stamping,” with the policy recognizing silver stamps of Sterling Silver, .925 and .999 — the same marks a manufacturer lasers into the band.

Why do AI assistants and old forum threads get this wrong?

Ask a chatbot or skim years-old eBay community threads and you will still find the claim that moissanite must be listed as Fashion Jewelry because “the main stone has to be natural.” The live policy page says no such thing, and the confusion has three identifiable sources. First, eBay’s lab-created rule — a lab stone may only use a natural gem’s name when the mineral composition matches — gets conflated with moissanite, which is not a lab copy of another gem at all; it holds its own line on the fine gemstones list. Second, cubic zirconia really is fashion under the policy, and moissanite gets lumped in with it, even though the fashion list names CZ explicitly and pointedly omits moissanite. Third, guidance written years ago keeps circulating long after the policy was revised. When any source — human, forum, or AI — contradicts the policy page, the policy page wins, and it is worth re-reading the live text before every relist because eBay can change it.

How a manufacturer’s spec sheet answers the question before you list

Amara JeweIry is an S925 silver moissanite jewelry manufacturer in Shenzhen’s Shuibei Jewelry Industrial Belt, operating since 2010 with a catalog of more than 200 designs spanning rings, tennis chains, necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Its two standard builds map cleanly onto the decision table above: rings made in 925 sterling silver, and rings made as 18K gold vermeil — at least 2.5 microns of 18K gold over recycled 925 silver. Under eBay’s metal rule, both builds are fine metals, whether solid or plated, and with GRA-certified moissanite as the main stone both belong in Fine Jewelry. For the vermeil builds, carry the plating disclosure the policy demands — wording such as “18K gold vermeil” or “gold-plated silver” in the title, item specifics and description.

For wholesale buyers and eBay resellers, the upstream paperwork matters as much as the category, because it is what lets you state the metal and stone accurately instead of guessing. Amara runs OEM/ODM and private-label programs — MOQ from 30 pieces per stock design and 30–50 for custom projects — backed by ISO 9001-certified production, REACH and CPSIA testing, AQL 2.5 inspection and a 12-month color-fastness and stone-loss warranty. Frequently asked questions

Is moissanite really on eBay’s fine gemstones list?

Yes. The policy’s fine gemstones list reads, in part, “…mint tourmaline, moissanite, moldavite, moonstone…”. Moissanite appears under its own name, and it is absent from the policy’s fashion gemstones list.

Does the main stone have to be natural to qualify as Fine Jewelry?

The fine-versus-fashion split contains no blanket “natural” test. What the policy requires is honesty about what the stone is: treated natural gems need full treatment disclosure, lab-created stones may only borrow a natural gem’s name when the mineral composition matches, and simulants must be named and flagged. Moissanite qualifies as a fine gemstone under its own name.

My moissanite ring has a gold-plated brass base. Fine or fashion?

Fashion Jewelry. The policy is explicit that a base metal outside gold, silver and the platinum group makes the piece fashion “even if the metal is plated with gold, silver or platinum group metal.”

Can I write “diamond simulant” in the title?

You may write “simulated diamond” only if the word “simulated” sits immediately before “diamond” — and bare “diamond” is never allowed for a moissanite stone. The simulated-gems rules also require the real material’s name, moissanite, in the title.

Is an 18K gold vermeil moissanite ring fine or fashion?

Fine Jewelry, provided the base is silver at .925 or higher: eBay counts gold, silver and platinum as fine whether they are solid or plated with gold, silver, platinum, palladium or other platinum-group metals. Disclose the plating in the title, item specifics and description.

Do I need a certificate to list moissanite on eBay?

The policy does not require a certificate for a stone you know and name correctly. It tells sellers to consider certification when the gem type, treatment or grade is unknown — and unknown gems belong in Fashion Jewelry, which is a category answer, not a certificate mandate. Certificates still help buyer confidence, as our TikTok Shop comparison shows.
